Mat Pilates (Beginner/Intermediate)
Our Pilates class is on hiatus for the summer, but will return to the schedule in September.
The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique and revolutionary combination of movement exercises developed by Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara in Europe and New York City up until the late 1960’s. The Pilates’ methods were revolutionary in their approach to physical fitness. Incorporating specially designed machines and apparatus as well as mat exercises, their method of “Contrology” helped to rehabilitate and condition dancers, actors, and the curious alike. In his 1945 manifesto “Return To Life Through Contrology”, Pilates wrote “Physical fitness is the first requisite to happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure."
Lorraine incorporates the original teachings of Pilates with the teachings of Master Teacher Ron Fletcher, who began his studies with Jospeh and Clara Pilates and then elaborated on the technique with the use of specific breath patterns and percussive breathing in order to bring awareness to aspects of the body during movement. Our Pilates Mat classes are taught by Lorraine Edminster.
