Frequently Asked Questions About Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga:
- Is prenatal yoga OK if I've never done yoga before?
Yes! Classes are designed to honor the needs and limitations of pregnancy. Also, all the postures can be modified to the level of the student. Unless your doctor has identified yours as a high-risk pregnancy, hich may mean waiting until you have entered your second trimester, you can attend prenatal classes even if you're brand new to yoga. Furthermore, especially if you are new to yoga, it is advisable to do the breathing and postures under the guidance of a certified instructor, rather than using a book or DVD at home.
- Is it OK to start yoga in the middle of my pregnancy?
Yes! It is never too late (or too early!) in the pregnancy to start prenatal yoga classes. In fact, even for those who maintain their regular practice or exercise routine through their first semester, many find the shift to Prenatal Yoga in their second semester is more appropriate for them and that it enhances the pregnancy experience.
- How far into my pregnancy can I practice yoga?
Many women find that they are able to continue their yoga practice right up to the birth of their child.
- When can I start postnatal yoga?
For vaginal births, it is recommended that you wait until the bleeding has stopped, usually 3-4 weeks after giving birth. For cesarean births, you should wait about 6 weeks. Please consult your doctor first before rejoining any yoga classes. Our Yoga for Women classes are a great way to begin your practice again after giving birth.
- Prenatal and Postnatal Yoginis are welcome at any of our Yoga for Women classes, in addition to the Prenatal and Prenatal/Postnatal classes; the instructors for these classes have completed Yoga Teacher Training specializing in prenatal yoga.
